Calvary Episcopal Church

315 Shady Ave., Shadyside

Tickets $10 through Pitt Arts

Chances are, your idea of a church service is pretty different from your idea of a concert.

This weekend, The Hilliard Ensemble brings the two together in a baroque show that won’t leave you broke, at only $10 per student ticket.

Presented by the Renaissance and Baroque Society, The Hilliard Ensemble plans to serenade listeners this weekend with “Se la Face ay Pale: 15th Century Mass and Motets,” a Renaissance-style performance at Calvary Episcopal Church.

Hilliard Ensemble has interwoven Burgundian melodies with the original Dufay selections. Among others, their additions include several motets, by the prolific Franco-Flemish Renaissance composer Josquin des Prez.

The Hilliard Ensemble, a critically acclaimed four-part vocal group hailing from England, consists of David James, countertenor, Rogers Covey-Crump, tenor, Steven Harrold, tenor, and Gordon Jones, baritone.

Touring worldwide, and with a substantial fan base in Europe, the group performs over 100 concerts per year. Not only do these singers specialize in early Medieval and Renaissance music, they also perform new music, much of it tailored to the group’s unique sound by contemporary composers.

The New York Times hailed the ensemble’s “smoothly blended sound,” calling it “the ensemble’s trademark.”

The Renaissance and Baroque Society invites all ticket holders to a pre-concert talk beginning at 7 p.m. Catch the Hilliard Ensemble Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Calvary Episcopal Church.

Pitt students can purchase tickets through Pitt Arts at the William Pitt Union for a discounted price of $10, or online at http://www.pittarts.pitt.edu.
