Gabeba Baderoon will be reading a selection of her poems today as a part of the Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series.
Baderoon, an internationally renowned poet, grew up in Crawford and Athlone, South Africa, and earned her Ph.D. degree in English at the University of Cape Town. She has been awarded the 2005 DaimlerChrysler Award for South African poetry and has held fellowships at the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town, Pennsylvania State University and the Oxford Institute for Islamic Studies.
Baderoon’s work includes “The Dream in the Next Body,” “The Museum of Ordinary Life” and, most recently, “A Hundred Silences.” Her work has also appeared in two anthologies, “Worldscapes” and “Ten Hallam Poets.”
The Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series has featured many distinguished authors in the past, including John Edgar Wideman, Richard Ford and ZZ Packer. Baderoon’s reading is free and open to the public. Her reading marks one of several that will take place throughout the school year.
Patrick McCabe (“Butcher Boy” and “Breakfast on Pluto”), journalist H.G. Bissinger (“Friday Night Lights”) and Todd James Pierce (“Newsworld”) will be featured in the upcoming months.
