Former Pitt defensive tackle Aaron Donald announced via his Twitter account on Saturday that he will be opening a restaurant in Oakland.
AD’s Pittsburgh Cafe — or AD’s PCafe, as Donald called it — is inspired by the former Pittsburgh Cafe, which closed in 2012. The new restaurant will occupy the same location on Meyran Ave. that the old Pittsburgh Cafe did. The location currently houses Winghart’s.
Winghart’s also has locations in the South Side, Greensburg, Monroeville and Market Square. Donald said the Oakland location will close due to the opening of his restaurant.
A sign on the Winghart’s Oakland location says it is “closed for renovation” until next year, when AD’s Pittsburgh Cafe opens.
A representative from Winghart’s could not be reached by the phone.
Donald said that opening the restaurant/bar was “something that me and my brother always talked about doing.”
“My brother has experience with bars, and [the new restaurant is] something to bring back to Pitt’s campus for people to go to,” Donald said in a direct message on Twitter. “[There are] not a lot of good bars on campus anymore and PCafe was a fun place to go when it was open.”
Donald played four seasons at Pitt, amassing 11 sacks and forcing four fumbles in his senior season in 2013. He was taken with the 13th overall pick by the St. Louis Rams. He has six sacks and 32 tackles in his rookie season so far.
Donald said that AD’s Pittsburgh Cafe will open around the first week in January, but his new edition will have some changes from the now-closed Pittsburgh Cafe.
“We’re making a couple changes to the inside,” he said. “It’s going to be a real cool spot to go.”
