Two seniors qualify for regionals

The Pitt men’s track and field qualified two athletes to compete in the NCAA regionals with… The Pitt men’s track and field qualified two athletes to compete in the NCAA regionals with strong performances at the Raleigh Relays last weekend in North Carolina.

The pair of Panther seniors, Tony Bonura and Corey Kuehner, delivered stellar results while their younger teammates experienced success of their own.

Bonura hurled his way to second in the javelin, tossing 67.84 meters. The Plum, Pa., native missed first by less than two meters.

Kuehner – a native of Palmerton, Pa. – landed his javelin throw at 62.23 meters, good for sixth place out of 25 hurlers.

Pitt freshman Eric Jones hopped his way to second in the triple jump with a personal-best 14.20 meters.

Sophomore A.J. Kielinski placed ninth overall in the hammer throw, nailing his personal-best at 49.94 meters.

Hurdling sophomore Mike Wray topped out at 14.57 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles while junior Andy Tomaswick took 11th in the 10,000-meter distance run. The duo qualified for the IC4A competition.

As for the ladies, Maureen McCandless ran her own school record in the 5,000-meter race, shaving over nine seconds off the previous record with a 16:11.24 seconds performance. The two-time All-American will compete in the NCAA regionals for the Panthers.

Sophomore sisters Shantea and Shanea Calhoun sprinted in the 100-meter dash. Shantea claimed second with an 11.95 sprint. Shanea took seventh, finishing just a third of a second behind her sister.

Juniors Julianna Reed and Martina Hallman competed in the 400-meter hurdles as Reed took third and Hallman raced to an eighth-place finish.

Next weekend, Pitt track and field will compete in the Western Pennsylvania Championship at Robert Morris and Carnegie Mellon.
