Curtis Smith, who teaches self-defense and aerobics classes at Pitt, led a self-defense seminar Tuesday night in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room.

Smith and six helpers taught maneuvers and techniques, led role-playing situations and gave advice on how to defend oneself in the case of an attack.

“He doesn’t just teach you how to act, he teaches you how to think,” said Lindsay Wright, a sophomore resident assistant from Holland Hall, who helped organize the seminar.

Panhellenic Society and resident assistants from Holland Hall hosted the seminar. About 80 women attended.

Career Services and Alpha Phi Alpha help students look their best

“You can’t possibly overdress” was the main advice given to members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and other students Tuesday night at a program run by Career Services in the William Pitt Union.

The program, called Dress For Success, was given by Katie Noris, a senior at Pitt and a peer career adviser from Career Services, and was sponsored by the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Norris said that when showing up for an interview with a company, students should dress in the style called “business professional.”

She talked about everything from shirt and tie color to the proper number of buttons on a suit.

“Stick with classics,” Norris said. “A lot depends on the seriousness of the company, but try to stay as traditional and conservative as possible.”

The program is just one of the opportunities offered by Career Services to help prepare students for life outside of college.
