Elections to move online?

Student Government Board President Brian Kelly said Friday that this year’s board elections… Student Government Board President Brian Kelly said Friday that this year’s board elections could be held online.

The board will vote on the proposal to move elections online at its first meeting this Tuesday.

Kelly – who will finish his second term as president in December – said that he will not be running again, but commented that this year’s election has the potential to be “extremely interesting.”

Kelly predicted that students would see several current board members make bids for reelection. He added that numerous people have expressed interest in running.

The board met Sunday morning to discuss, among other things, a schedule for meetings this semester. The board will meet on Tuesdays at 8 p.m.

Kelly has his plate full in his final semester as president. On Friday he said the board was currently involved in a debate on revamping the elections code to remove certain obscurities.

Last year’s election results were contested by some who accused Kelly’s slate, Proven, of misusing SGB office supplies.

In addition, allegations were made that Jennifer Anukem – also a member of Proven – inappropriately affiliated her slate with the Driven slate in the signature of an e-mail.

The protests, however, didn’t hold much ground. All three members of Proven were elected and all three members of Driven made the board, giving the slates the presidency and a combined majority on the board.

Last year’s Elections chair, Andrew Powers, will fill the position again in this November’s election.

Kelly – who supports moving the elections to the Internet – said that the system would be run similar to last year’s homecoming court elections. He added that Panther Central has encouraged the Board to put the elections online.
