It is preposterous to think that any dignified educator of Roman Catholic Church doctrine… It is preposterous to think that any dignified educator of Roman Catholic Church doctrine would teach that homosexuality is “evil” and that “homosexuals are the demise of society.” The opening of Friday, Oct. 15’s front-page article, “Campus Celebrates Coming Out Week,” suggests that Matt Rabatin’s understanding of church doctrine is held by all Catholics. This could not be further from the truth and reflects a lack of understanding on his part.
I find it difficult to reconcile his imprecise views with my 12 years of education in the Catholic faith. In fact, it quite upsets me that he demonstrates such a shallow grasp of the actual catechetical teachings. I never once was led to believe that “being gay was wrong and that it was against all the teachings of the church.”
Perhaps he should practice restraint before brandishing an establishment such as the Church with harsh and undeserved criticism. Closer attention to the facts may have pointed him to the truth of the matter. The Church does not teach that the nature of homosexuality is a sin. Homosexuals are to be loved and respected in the same manner as all of humanity.
According to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, “Homosexuals, like everyone else, should not suffer from prejudice against their basic human rights. They have a right to respect, friendship and justice. They should have an active role in the Christian community.” This statement shows clearly how children in Catholic schools are being educated and should not be entangled with unnecessary denigration of beliefs that many Catholics cherish.
