Breaker! is bringing its danceable, new-wave punk to Pittsburgh this week. Fresh off their first full-length release, Breaker! Breaker! is supporting Le Tigre, along with Gravy Train, at Mr. Small’s Theatre in Millvale.

Breaker! Breaker! is comprised of drummer Gina Marie Scardino, guitarist Collin Mel Cunningham, and keyboardist Duncan Gamble. Since they have different musical styles and tastes, their plethora of influences makes their music stand out. It produces an eccentric and unique combination that keeps you on your toes.

Maybe you could think of them as a B52’s-unique pop sound combined with punk and dance rock overtones, or maybe the danceable rock sounds of the Killers combined with the dirtiness of early ’80s punk. Pinpointing it isn’t easy, but listening to Breaker! Breaker! and liking them for what they are definitely is.

After the release of a few homemade EPs, Breaker! Breaker!’s first official release, Where All the Birds Yell, was finally released this year. Where All the Birds Yell rips by you in a whirlwind of ranting vocals and furious dance-punk beats. It hits you fast and hard, tearing through 10 songs in 25 minutes.

What makes them stand out from the new hipster movement of dance rock is the way they combine their three-way vocals to spice things up a bit. Each vocal adds a different style to their songs. Scardano’s vocals are reminiscent of an early Belinda Carlisle (if she were to sing quirky rock songs, that is).

Try and catch Breaker! Breaker! tonight. Not only is Breaker! Breaker! the perfect accent to Le Tigre, but if they are as fun and crazy live as they are on their CD, they could be one of the greatest live bands rising from the New York scene.
