“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is a film that everyone who watches it can relate to. Every person who has ever been in a relationship has felt what the characters portrayed by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet feel as they twist and turn through emotions, fighting to keep their memories alive.

Released on DVD this week, “Eternal Sunshine” is a must-have. The special features include deleted scenes — and after watching them, it’s clear why they were deleted. But all is not lost — there is a 15-minute sit-down conversation with Jim Carrey and director Michel Gondry. Sitting in desks that take you back to grade school, Carrey and Gondry dissect the ins and outs of filming the movie.

They take you deep into the madness of shooting scenes that are phenomenal moments in the film. Scenes like the childhood memory where Carrey’s character Joel is in his kitchen, sitting under the table coloring the floor. They show how they shot the scene without using any special effects. By tilting the table on one end and keeping it normal on the opposite side it appears as if the table is so much larger than the actors at the tilted end.

They also chat about the scene where the elephants and the circus parade down the streets of New York City. They reveal that the scene was shot as the action was taking place; it was not scripted. They were filming another scene when they heard that the circus was walking through. Full crew in tow, they ran to the scene and shot the memorable sequence as if it was planned.

Also included on the DVD is a behind-the-scenes look at the film with interviews with producers and actors. The disc also contains the off-the-wall video for Polyphonic Spree’s song “Light and Day/Reach for the Sky.”

Overall, the special features are worthwhile, but what makes the DVD worth buying is the film itself. If you haven’t seen this movie, shame on you. Now drop this paper, and run, don’t walk, to a store to purchase this DVD.
