Women’s soccer gets split at Greensboro

The Panthers split their two matches, falling to host UNC-Greensboro 2-0, before bouncing back to beat Old Dominion 1-0 on Sunday.

“We found out more about ourselves after bouncing back from the loss and finding a way to win, which I think was the most important thing,” head coach Sue-Moy Chin said. “Even though we didn’t play all that good, we still found a way to win.”

UNC-Greensboro 2, Pitt 0

The Panthers were unable to establish much offense in the first contest of the classic, and were shut out for the first time this season. After a scoreless first half, the first 20 minutes of the second half were spent in the Pittsburgh end, and, finally, UNC-Greensboro broke through with a goal by Dacia Beachum in the 66th minute.

“We didn’t get much going in the way of our attack,” Chin said. “We had some good chances that we didn’t finish on, and it was just a tough game.”

Pitt 1, Old Dominion 0

The Panthers got back above .500 for the season with an excellent defensive effort against Old Dominion, enabling them to leave the classic with a split.

Kristina Francois ended a great offensive sequence with a left-footed shot just outside of the 18-yard box that bounced off the post and into the back of the net for the only goal of the contest.

Panther goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi made seven saves to preserve the shutout.

The Panthers are back in action Friday at home against Georgetown.
