It seems fitting that the Pitt softball team’s season ended the same way the season itself… It seems fitting that the Pitt softball team’s season ended the same way the season itself could be described: a washout.
After splitting a doubleheader at Robert Morris University and dropping a pair of games at Boston College, the Panthers traveled to Storrs, Conn. where they were scheduled to play their final two games of the season.
But after three innings of play, with the Huskies leading 3-0, the games were called due to rain. No scores or stats will count for either team and the games will not be rescheduled, thus ending Pitt’s season.
Pitt 2, Robert Morris 1
The Colonials drew first blood when Ashlee Smith hit an RBI single in the second inning, giving Robert Morris its only run of the game.
In the Panthers’ next at bat, freshman left fielder Joey Scarf’s RBI single knotted the game at one.
The game remained tied at one until the sixth inning when freshman catcher Heather Connor hit a single that allowed pinch runner Desiree Dye to score. Connor had a solid day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with one RBI.
Freshman pitcher Laura Belardinelli picked up the win for Pitt, pitching seven complete innings, giving up only four hits and one run with five strikeouts.
Robert Morris 3, Pitt 2
Neither team was able to produce any offense until the fourth inning when Christa Hunter hit an RBI single to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
That score would stand until the bottom of the fifth inning when Robert Morris was able to play small ball and manufacture a run.
The game remained tied at one until the eighth inning when Pitt’s Sheena Hellon hit a single that allowed senior center fielder Beth Gill to score from third.
The Colonials responded in their half of the eighth inning by taking advantage of a wild pitch by Meghan Bostick.
With the game still tied at two and the bases loaded, Belardinelli entered the game and walked in the winning run.
Boston College 3, Pitt 2
The Eagles jumped on the board first, taking advantage of back-to-back singles to grab a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Heather Andrews connected on an RBI single in the third inning that tied the game at one, but Boston College immediately responded. The Eagles’ Jacqui Goodchild celebrated senior day in an impressive fashion, connecting on a two-run home run to rightfield.
Sophomore right fielder Jessica Thomas later scored an unearned run to bring Pitt within one, but thanks to some solid pitching from Britney Thompson, Pitt was unable to score the tying run.
Thomas went 2-for-2 and walked once. She also scored the Panthers only run of the ballgame.
Boston College 3, Pitt 0
The Eagles scored all of their runs in the third inning, thanks in part to Kimmy Hopkin, who hit a two-run home run to give Thompson all the run support she needed to get past the Panthers.
Pitt was held hitless throughout the first five innings of play. The lone bright spot for Pitt was Casey Pickard, who tied a team record when she hit her 13th double of the season.
Bostick pitched a complete game in the losing effort, allowing three runs on five hits and walking three. Bostick finished the regular season with a record of 10-19.
After steadily improving over the last few seasons, Pitt finishes the season 21-36 overall and 3-15 in Big East play. The Panthers finished with the worst conference record since their inaugural season in the Big East back in 1999, when they finished 2-14.
