We’re glad you’re interested in writing for The Pitt News! Our hope is that, after looking over this letter, the application, and the policies sheet, you will have a strong understanding of what it means to be a Pitt News columnist.
Writing for the Opinions Section is a great opportunity to contribute to the forum of ideas, but it is also quite demanding. As a columnist, you will be required to meet a strict weekly or bi-weekly deadline, with quality as the top concern. Schedules will get hectic at certain points in the semester, so it is important for a columnist to commit time to writing on deadline.
Columns vary in focus and style. We’ve had a number of writers make names for themselves in the past simply because they were funny or satirical. Others have received attention for their strong political stances. Still others enjoyed writing about issues in daily life. Our goal is to organize a group of strong writers with differing views that will serve to incite discussion at Pitt.
As the independent student newspaper of the University of Pittsburgh, we are able to reach about 30,000 readers everyday. We publish Monday through Friday, offering a unique opportunity for writers to make their voices heard.
We appreciate your interest and look forward to reading your applications!
Sincerely,
Sydney Bergman ‘ Maria Nicole Smith
