Letters to the Editor

Thank you for the great article you ran recently about fair-trade coffee. Your writer did a good job of shedding light on the plight of the coffee farmers who produce the coffee we consume.

We want your readers to know that, in addition to The Quiet Storm — a wonderful coffee house and meeting place at 5430 Penn Ave., which serves only fair-trade coffee — there are other outlets for fair-trade coffee in Pittsburgh. Building New Hope, a local non-profit organization that has been supporting developing communities in Central America since 1992, has been selling organic, shade-grown, fair-trade coffee from a workers’ cooperative in Nicaragua.

The coffee is stored and roasted by La Prima Espresso Co., in Pittsburgh’s Strip District. The coffee is being served and sold around town at The Quiet Storm, the East End Food Co-op, 61C Cafe, Bliss, Tango Cafe, Whole Foods Market, Tessaro’s and many other places. For more information, contact buildnewhope@earthlink.net or call (412) 241-2542.

Thank you.
