Andrew and Peter Cash are two brothers who, after being separated for most of their lives,… Andrew and Peter Cash are two brothers who, after being separated for most of their lives, were reunited in 1997. Musically speaking, that is.
Before then, both of the Canadian-born brothers had successful solo careers in genres much different from one another. Andrew played politically conscious punk in the 1980s band L’etranger and then formed his own band, Ursula, after L’etranger broke up in 1986. Meanwhile, Peter played in the emerging market of alternative-country as the principal songwriter for the Skydiggers through most of the 1990s.
Bringing the two together – one roots, one punk – creates a unique sound that could only result from such a combination. Each of the Cash Brothers brings their own style to their music. But it was the more folksy melodies of Peter Cash that won out on their first Rounder Records release, How Was Tomorrow?.
And with the 2003 release of their newest album, A Brand New Night, the brothers are moving away from alt-country roots and showing that they can be edgy and contemporary while retaining their moody, melancholy sound.
Following the Cash Brothers’ show, local bands Seven Color Sky – formerly Ordinary Boys – and Tangerine will perform. Tickets for this separate, local show can be purchased at Rosebud for an extra $3-$5 when you buy your Cash Brothers tickets.
To support their new album and sound, the Cash Brothers will be performing this Saturday at 8 p.m. at Rosebud, located in the Strip District. Tickets range from $10-$12 at the door. You must be 21 years of age or older. For more information, contact Rosebud at (412) 261-2232.
