The holiday season is upon us, and that means it’s time to start donning coats, scarves,… The holiday season is upon us, and that means it’s time to start donning coats, scarves, gloves and, of course, Mexican wrestling masks. That is, if you are the instrumental surf-rock band Los Straitjackets. This year, the quartet is setting out to make Christmas even more colorful with the Los Straitjackets Christmas Pageant 2003, which will be presented at Rosebud this Saturday.
For those not familiar with the band, Los Straitjackets are as much a show for the eyes as for the ears, performing in Mexican wrestling masks, with each member having his own special identity. Eddie Angel, who wears a black-and-gold mask, joins Danny Amis, aka “Daddy-O Grande,” who wears blue and silver, on guitars for the band. Jimmy Lester, aka “Caveman,” plays drums and sports a red-and-gold mask, and bassist Pete Curry, or “Pedro Del Mar,” wears a blue-and-gold mask complete with multicolored fish fins.
Armed with their own retro renditions of holiday classics from their release last year, ‘Tis the Season for Los Straitjackets, and accompanied by the World Famous Pontani Sisters, who strive to bring glamour back to entertainment, while clad in Las Vegas-style go-go costumes that rival the boys’ masks, Los Straitjackets plan a show that is sure to shake the slush off your boots.
The Los Straightjackets Christmas Pageant 2003, featuring Los Straightjackets, the World Famous Pontani Sisters and Legendary Shack Shakers, sets up camp at Rosebud in the Strip District on Saturday. The show begins at 8:30 p.m. and tickets range from $14 to $16. For more information, call (412) 261-2232.
