SGB President Liz Culliton opened Tuesday night’s SGB meeting with a tape dispenser, instead of a gavel, explaining that she had left the gavel at home. Despite the board’s holdup with the Robert Rules of Order – the rules about who can speak and when – during their meeting, they continued planning the Panther Pride Campus Wide event.

SGB hopes to make this event a tradition that will be carried out by future SGB members. Panther Pride Campus Wide will be held on Friday, before Pitt’s Homecoming football game Saturday. All the events leading up to the fireworks will be sponsored by SGB.

“This will be the first time we have done this,” said SGB member Brian Kelly.

Events for Friday will include a banner competition with a Pitt Pride theme. Students who come out for the event and display their blue and gold colors will receive surprise prizes.

In the name of school spirit, SGB plans to teach students new cheers, while reminiscing with old-school cheers, as well.

“It’s just a time to familiarize students with new cheers,” Kelly said.

Along with the lesson in cheers, SGB will host a spirit competition that will allow students to express school pride. Finally, before the fireworks begin, the banner competition will be judged and the winners will be announced. The event is going to be a tradition that this year’s SGB hopes to continue.

Election talk is not only for the Pittsburgh area, but also for Student Government Board. The new change in elections to a calendar year means that SGB elections will be held soon.

Candidates have yet to be announced, and the application deadline is Friday, Oct. 24. Once the papers are in, the candidate orientation will begin. Kelly said he was pleased by SGB’s ability to quickly elect the committee chairs, which allowed the chairs to become more involved this semester.

The change in elections, from the spring to the fall, will allow the new SGB members, who will take office at the beginning of the spring semester and the new calendar year, to get oriented with one another and elect committee chairs before the summer.

Once SGB battled its way through allocation requests, the meeting was quickly adjourned and the few people still in the room went home.
