Bigelow Bash, Bigelow Blvd…. Queens of the Stone Age and guests

Tomorrow, 5 p.m.

Bigelow Bash, Bigelow Blvd.

Free Show, sponsored by Pitt Program Council

A year ago, Nirvana and Soundgarden were still probably the best grunge bands of all time; now, Queens of the Stone Age fits, too.

The fantabulous Grammy-nominated four-piece from the desert wastelands of the United States are rocking out right here on Bigelow Boulevard for the annual Pitt Program Council-sponsored Bigelow Bash Saturday afternoon.

For those of you in the dark about Queens of the Stone Age, their LP, Songs for the Deaf, made a plethora of top 10 lists in 2002. It covers everything from the dark and macabre to stoner, to even surf rock across approximately an hour of a monstrously amazing disc. Paired with a DVD, it featured the band’s performances around the country and shenanigans in the studio. The fame of Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl added some celebrity to the group – he banged the skins for the album.

Grohl was only a one-time part of the Queens, who happened to have many special guests on their albums, as well as deep roots in bands as far back as the early ’90s stoner rock magicians, Kyuss. Dave had been following frontman Josh Homme, bassist Nick Oliveri, and former A Perfect Circle guitarist/keyboardist Mark Lanagan, as well as touring with the boys.

The Queens have been known for their amazingly powerful live shows, which escalate into all-out fan riots, hoarding to grasp every ounce of majesty from the band. After two tours late last fall, including one with U.K. powerhouses … And You Will Know Us By the Trail Of Dead, the band should receive nothing but a warm welcome from our fellow student body, and you should have absolutely no excuse for not attending, since it’s free.
