The dream catchers were one of several craft projects Jumpstart members organized at an activities fair at Schenley Skating Rink on Monday. Other crafts included making collages and posters depicting themes related to King, such as “equality” and “unity.”
According to freshman Jumpstart member Ashley Moorefield, King is an inspiration because “he devoted his life to service and helping others … and that’s what Jumpstart stands for.”
Jumpstart team leader Angela Jackson said Jumpstart members usually work with children who attend schools in lower income areas.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is one of two mandatory volunteer days for Jumpstart members, who volunteered all over the city, working at a woman’s shelter and cleaning libraries.
Sophomore Julian Smith said the holiday is important to Jumpstart because “kids of all races show up at our event … and you would think there’s a difference between us and the kids because we’re older, but we can all still come together.”
