On Nov. 21, Pittsburgh police responded to a call at 2:55 a.m. reporting that a car had crashed into three parked vehicles on the 4100 block of Haldane Street in Greenfield, just a little more than two miles from campus, according to the report.
Upon arrival at the scene, police found David E. Berry Jr., of Penn Hills, a 22-year-old first-year undergraduate student in the School of Social Work, shot inside his 1999 Chevrolet Camaro. The report indicated that a single bullet entered the car through the rear window on the driver’s side and passed through the driver’s seat, piercing Berry in the back.
According to the report, Berry was transported to UPMC Presbyterian where he was pronounced dead at 3:26 a.m. The report said homicide detectives canvassed the area, but nobody heard gunshots or saw anything unusual. The first call police received, according to the report, was to alert them of the car crash.
The report indicated that detectives believed the shooting occurred about two blocks away from Haldane Street, near the intersection of Alma Avenue and Stanley Street, where they found multiple shell casings and broken glass from the window in which Berry was shot.
Police are asking anyone with information regarding Berry’s shooting to call the city homicide squad at (412) 665-4050.
