You’ve heard of Mozart, Beethoven and Bach, but what about Zahab, Ortiz, Kohn or White? You may want to remember those names, along with a few more such as Garcia, Smith, Reed, Reiter and Kohn. These are the names of some of the up-and-coming composers whose works will be performed this Tuesday evening at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium as part of the University of Pittsburgh’s Music on the Edge series.
Directed by Pitt professors Mathew Rosenblum and Eric Moe, Music on the Edge puts on several concerts a year, bringing music by emerging composers to Pitt. The program also highlights new performing talents playing classical and chamber music styles. This Tuesday’s performance will showcase Leah Givelber performing on violin along with veteran Music on the Edge pianist Robert Frankenberry.
For some of the composers, the performance of their music will be a homecoming, as this concert will be highlighting composers who have an association with Pitt, either now or at some time in the past.
Both Andrew Kohn and Barbara White are Pitt alums who now teach elsewhere; Kohn at West Virginia University and White at Princeton. Pablo Ortiz is a former member of Pitt’s music faculty now teaching at the University of California-Davis. Roger Zahab’s music has an even shorter distance to travel. He is a lecturer in Pitt’s music department in addition to instructing violin and serving as director of the University Chamber Orchestra. Tuesday evening he will also be directing the Music on the Edge Ensemble, the group of musicians who perform the pieces.
