Delta Sigma Phi raises money for the blind

Members of Delta Sigma Phi, along with members of the Oakland Lions Club, sold candy bars and collected money on the streets to raise proceeds for the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children and Pittsburgh Vision Services during annual White Cane Day.

“We try to do something with the Lions Club every year,” said Ken Terwilliger, president of Delta Sigma Phi.

The fraternity worked with the Lions Club two years ago for White Cane Day, and plans to work with the organization more in the future. Terwilliger said Delta Sigma Phi especially enjoys helping the blind because the School for Blind Children is “right in our backyard.”

Terwilliger and Lions Club president Matt Gjurich said they were pleased with the amount of money they raised, but they have done better in the past.

“There weren’t a lot of people out,” Gjurich said. “I was surprised.”

Terwilliger attributed the lack of people to the timing of the event.

“I think the timing was a little off,” he said. “We might have been out there a little too early.”

The brothers and Lions began at 11 a.m. and sold candy until 2 p.m.

Terwilliger said he didn’t know how much the whole event raised, but he said the brothers raised about $500 dollars from the candy.

Terwilliger said White Cane Day was a good experience and he hopes to continue working with the Lions Club in the future.

“We try to do this every year,” he said.
