Minton column ignorant, offensive

I found Will Minton’s column “North Korea is a… Minton column ignorant, offensive

I found Will Minton’s column “North Korea is a serious threat” to be ignorant and offensive. The premise of the entire column is that North Korea will eventually invade South Korea.

Will Minton is not a high-ranking member of the North Korean government. He has no way of knowing if North Korea will attack South Korea or not. In his column, he states “North Korea will wait until the U.S. military is occupied in Iraq and then invade.” How can he possibly know this, or whether the United States has the military power to fight a war on two fronts? In World War II, America fought pretty well in the Pacific and Atlantic theaters.

Even if North Korea attacks South Korea, the 38th parallel, which divides the two countries, is littered with land mines, and any ground force would be delayed for a considerable amount of time. Minton does not mention that South Korea has a considerable army and international allies.

He also states that American intervention helped South Korea win the Korean War. South Korea did not win the Korean War. Nobody won. Both countries merely agreed to stop fighting and created a border at the demilitarized zone at the 38th parallel.

Being of Korean descent, I found Minton’s opinion not only poorly informed but offensive as well. What is the point of saying, “North Korea will invade South Korea and North Korea will win?” This seems like militaristic hate-mongering and encourages distrust and possibly violence to Koreans living in the United States. I am very disappointed that The Pitt News would support and encourage such an article by printing it.
