The Center for Bioethics and Health Law will be hosting a presentation by Dr. Margaret Byrne titled “Paying for Participation in Human Subjects Research” in the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic Auditorium, located on the second floor, at noon.
From 7 to 11 p.m., Nightmare in the Quad, hosted by the Resident Students Association, will be taking place in Schenley Quad, featuring the annual Holland Haunted House, a performance of “Thriller,” food, music and pumpkin carving. Come in costume.
Friday, Nov. 1
At 10 a.m., Benny Golson will give a lecture titled “Composing and Orchestrating for Film” in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room.
Pat Martino will be giving a talk titled “The Role of Guitar in Jazz” in the Union Assembly Room at 1 p.m.
In the Union Assembly Room, a talk titled “Brass Connection” will take place at 2:30 p.m., featuring Benny Bailey, Oscar Brashear and Curtis Fuller.
At 3 p.m. in Room 3D10 of Posvar Hall, the anthropology department will host a lecture titled “Khirigsuurs, Skulls and Heavenly Bodies: Recent archeological findings in central Mongolia,” given by Dr. Francis Allard.
At 4 p.m. in the Union Assembly Room, there will be a seminar titled “Rhythm Sections in Jazz,” featuring Monty Alexander and Bob Magnusson.
Saturday, Nov. 2
“The Legends of Jazz,” featuring Bobby Watson, will begin at 10 a.m. in the Union Assembly Room.
In the Union Assembly Room at 11:30 a.m., Carl Allen will give a talk titled “Artistry and Rhythm.”
Pitt will be hosting its 32nd Jazz Concert in the Carnegie Music Hall at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 for students. For tickets, call (412) 648-7814 or visit the Union ticket office.
College of Arts and Sciences freshmen can see the Squonk Opera for free with their Pitt ID at 7 p.m. in the Byham Theatre. Monday, Nov. 4
At 2 p.m. in Room 3D10 of Posvar Hall, the anthropology department will host Ellen R. Cowie’s lecture titled “Continuity and Change at Contact Period in Norridgewock.”
Chabad on Campus, Hillel, the Jewish Heritage Program and the Israel ‘ Overseas Task Force of the United Jewish Federation is hosting a lecture titled “Militant Islam and the War on Terror” at 7 p.m. in the Carnegie Lecture Hall. Although there is no fee to attend because of limited seating, those interested should call (412) 992-5243 for reservations.
The Conney M. Kimbo Gallery will be hosting an exhibit titled “Creative Expression,” which is artwork created by students during the exhibit, which lasts through Nov. 16. Students can add their own creations to the exhibit by stopping by the University Art Gallery Nov. 6 or Nov. 13 at noon. The artwork will be returned after the conclusion of the exhibit.
Pitt’s music department and the Asian Studies Center will present the six-string zither player Jin Hi Kim at 8 p.m. in the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium. The even is free to Pitt students.
Tuesday, Nov. 5
Professor Barbara McClokey will give a talk called “War as Art” in Room 203 in the Frick Fine Arts Building at noon. Pitt’s department of history of art and architecture will host the talk.
There will be a three-week stress management workshop that continues to Nov. 12 and Nov. 19. Each day it will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. To register, call the Health Education Offices at (412) 383-1830.
Flu shots will be offered for $10 in the Union Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for University faculty, staff and students.
Professor Jules Lobel will speak on human rights litigation, hosted by the World Federalist Association of Pittsburgh and the global studies program at Pitt. The lecture will take place at 1 p.m. in Room 244 of the Cathedral of Learning.

There is a belly-dancing seminar hosted by Pitt Program Council from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in the Lower Lounge of the Union. Pitt students get in free with an ID, but space is limited, so participants must sign up at the Union ticket office.
