The first Tyrannosaurus rex discovered is celebrating its centennial this year. OK, while the actual dinosaur is much older than that, its discovered skeleton is turning 100.

In 1902, Barnum Brown dug up the first remains of the “tyrant lizard king,” which has called the Carnegie Museum of Natural History home for 60 years.

To celebrate these two anniversaries, the museum is having a “birthday party” this weekend. Festivities actually kicked off yesterday with an unveiling of a life-size cast of the beast at the Pittsburgh International Airport.

Tomorrow, the museum will open a temporary exhibit in Dinosaur Hall showing the Tyrannosaurus rex’s discovery and his move to the ‘Burgh.

There will also be plenty of events for children, including party bags with dinosaur party favors, dinosaur songs and free posters. A “Science on Stage” performance about the Carnegie’s most famous dinosaur hunter, Earl Douglas, will take place tomorrow and mini-tours of Dinosaur Hall will be given every half hour between 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. And what would a birthday party be without cake? At 3 p.m. in the Brown Bag lunchroom, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Strapped for cash? This feature is called “Cheap,” and you can’t get any cheaper than free. Admission to the Carnegie won’t cost you a thing as long as you have your Pitt ID. So rather than becoming a fossil in your dorm room, go see some at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

“Cheap” is a weekend feature; it strives to find fun and cheap events – less than $10 – happening around Pittsburgh this weekend.
