Gov. Tom Ridge to leave office Oct. 5

In the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., President George W…. In the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., President George W. Bush appointed Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge to the newly created cabinet-level position as the director of the Office of Homeland Security.

Ridge will resign his post Oct. 5 to take on the appointment. Lt. Gov. Mark Schweiker will replace Ridge when he steps down.
