Naje Gibson, a talented women’s basketball recruit, will not attend Pitt this year as she is academically ineligible, according to reports by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Karen Price of the Tribune-Review reported last night that Gibson, a 6-foot forward, will attend Florida State College, a junior college. The minimum GPA required by the NCAA, for high school student-athletes to be considered eligible for college play, is 2.0. The eligibility mark is 2.5 for junior college transfers.
The University Registrar’s Office deferred any enrollment questions about University students to the National Student Clearinghouse, which doesn’t process enrollment verification over the phone.
Gibson was part of a four-person recruiting class, along with high school teammate Yacine Diop, which is head coach’s Suzie McConnell-Serio’s first full group since she was hired in April of last year.
The other three players, all incoming freshmen, are listed on Pitt People Finder as registered students. Gibson does not return any results when searched.
A Pitt Athletics spokesperson couldn’t be reached for comment.
Gibson, a Pittsburgh area native, attended Seton-La Salle high schooland helped lead the school to two state championships during her time there, winning Class AA player of the year honors this past season.
She was rated a four-star recruit by ESPN.
Seton-La Salle is McConnell-Serio’s alma mater.
