Panthers of the week: Jordan Whitehead and Brenna Wise

JORDAN WHITEHEAD — Safety, football

The freshman defensive back was the bright spot of the Panthers’ 42-30 loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday, excelling in mulitple facets of the game. On defense, Whitehead led the Panthers in tackles with 11, and recorded 1.5 tackles for loss. Whitehead has 73 tackles on the season, leading Pitt in his first season, while ranking seventh in the ACC in tackles per game with 8.1. Whitehead will continue his stellar season on Saturday, when Pitt kicks off against Duke at noon in Durham, North Carolina.

BRENNA WISE — Guard, women’s basketball

Wise impressed in her first collegiate contest, leading the Panthers with 19 points in Sunday’s 75-60 exhibition win over Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Wise was 8-11 from the field to get her 19 points, while also tallying four rebounds and four assists and adding one block. She played 29 minutes — the second most of anyone on the team. The seniorless team expects the freshman from Vincentian Academy in Pittsburgh to be a major contributor this season. The Panthers open up their season Friday at 11 a.m. when they take on Wagner College at the Petersen Events Center.
