Slippery when wet: Pitt game against Gonzaga called due to floor conditions

The Pitt men’s basketball team traveled 6600 miles for a game that didn’t even count.

During the first intermission, the referees determined the Panthers’ game against the No. 9 Gonzaga Bulldogs would not continue due to slippery court conditions on the military base court in Okinawa, Japan.

The Panthers were in Japan as part of the Armed Forces Classic.

Pitt was leading 39-37 when officials called the game, but the game will not count toward its record.

The issue of the court’s slipperiness became most apparent with 8:30 left in the half, as Pitt senior point guard James Robinson lost his footing and fell directly on his face, leaving the game before returning a few minutes later.

During gameplay, junior forward Michael Young led the Panthers offensively. He tallied 11 points, four rebounds and two assists in the half. Robinson and redshirt junior Chris Jones each scored seven.

Pitt returns to the United States for a Tuesday game against St. Joseph’s (Ind.). Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
