The ceremony for Stewart, known to students as “Doc Stewart,” will begin in the Heinz Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. It is open to the public.

Stewart, who died Wednesday after a long illness, was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Honors College, an institution that now has a $12 million endowment funding undergraduate research. He is known for giving students freedom to research outside traditional academic constraints. Through programs such as the Brackenridge Fellowship, he advocated for a multidisciplinary approach to research.

Stewart began his career at Pitt as an assistant physics professor in 1972.

Five years later, he became the first head of the University Honors Program, which is now the University Honors College. He was the only dean in the history of the Honors College.
