Pitt softball cheers at the softball game against RMU in Vartabedian Field on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2024.
Pitt is ramping up towards one of its busier weekends of the spring schedule. Spring sports are in full swing after both men’s and women’s basketball lost in their respective conference tournaments.
Baseball
Pitt baseball (10-5) opens its conference schedule this weekend at Georgia Tech. The season has started rough for the team, with no true statement wins and confounding losses against teams like Bucknell, Monmouth and East Tennessee State twice last weekend. The Panthers’ pitching has struggled for the team all season.
In their most recent win, Pitt routed Youngstown State 17-7.
Georgia Tech, on the other hand, boasts a 14-3 record, as well as a win in its first ACC series against Virginia Tech 2-1.
Pitt is unlikely to win the series, but taking a game from Georgia Tech is a possibility.
Softball
Pitt softball will take on No. 10 Florida State on the road this weekend, playing a doubleheader on Saturday.
The team has had a lackluster start, as it boasts a 10-13 record thus far. The team has struggled with competition across the board and will likely continue to do so against a top-10 opponent.
Pitt has played one ACC series thus far, losing all three against North Carolina. Florida State comes into the series at 22-5. They will open ACC play against Pitt and will likely sweep them.
Lacrosse
Pitt lacrosse will have its toughest test of the season to this point on Saturday, taking on No. 8 Syracuse.
Pitt lacrosse has had quite the impressive season, as it is off to a 5-3 start with wins against rival Penn State and its second ACC win all-time against Cal. The team played former No. 8 Stanford earlier in the season, losing in a high-scoring affair 16-12.
Pitt lacrosse will have a chance at its first ranked win in program history at 11 a.m. on Saturday when they take on Syracuse at home.
Pitt is coming off of its third-straight win, in which they took down Liberty 16-6. But Syracuse is coming off a loss to No. 10 Johns Hopkins, its fifth straight game against a ranked opponent.
Track and field
Pitt track and field is participating in the NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia, this weekend. Pitt has only sent one athlete to the tournament, as senior Je’Nyia Burton will represent Pitt after winning the ACC Championship the previous weekend in the women’s 400 meter.
Gymnastics
Pitt gymnastics heads to Columbus, Ohio, for a four-team meet on Sunday. Pitt will compete against host Ohio State along with Kent State and West Virginia.
Pitt has yet to win an ACC meet this season, but was victorious over West Virginia in their most recent meet, winning 196.575-196.275 and earning its second-best score in team history.
Men’s soccer
Pitt men’s soccer takes on West Virginia in a spring scrimmage game on Friday, marking the beginning of their spring schedule.
After a disappointing appearance in last year’s tournament and the departure of their seniors, the team will show off their new transfers for the first time as they take on a local foe.
