Redshirt Junior linebacker Kyle Louis (9) at Pitt's game against Duquesne at Acrisure Stadium on Aug. 30, 2025.
Back in 2024, Pitt’s linebacker room adopted a new identity. While it may have said Panthers on their jerseys, they considered themselves Sharks. Spearheaded by junior linebacker Kyle Louis, the unit emphasized speed, aggression and constant pursuit. It’s these very traits that now make Louis one of the most intriguing linebacker prospects in the 2026 NFL draft — and a legitimate first-round talent.
Recently, Louis turned in an impressive performance at the 2026 NFL combine. Posting a 40-yard dash time of 4.53 seconds, a 10-yard split time of 1.58 seconds and a vertical of 39.50” — these were all top four in this year’s linebackers class. Louis also excelled in the broad jump, three-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle, finishing second with a 10-feet-9-inch leap and posting a 6.97-second three-cone time before placing third in his final event.
For a position increasingly defined by range and coverage ability, Louis’ combine results certainly validate his projection as an impact defender at the next level.
This performance isn’t anything new to Louis — or to Pitt fans that have had the pleasure of watching him at the collegiate level over the past four years. Since his breakout season in 2024, Louis has been the heartbeat of Pitt’s linebacker unit, consistently flying to the football and setting the tone on Saturdays and even Thursdays.
In 2024, Louis finished with 101 tackles and led the team in tackles for loss (15.5), sacks (7) and interceptions (4). This dominant campaign led to the standout linebacker finishing third in ACC Defensive Player of the Year voting.
In 2025, Louis proved his breakout season was no fluke. Despite starting 11 games compared to 13 the year prior, he recorded 81 tackles, with double-digit tackle games in four of them. Eight and a half of those were tackles for loss and three sacks. To add to this, he also recorded two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.
These numbers clearly demonstrate the consistency that defined his rise in 2024. With Louis at the center of the defense, Pitt led the Atlantic Coast Conference in fourth-down conversion defense, defensive touchdowns and team tackles for loss, which speaks to the influence he had on one of the conference’s most disruptive defenses.
In today’s NFL, the linebacker position demands more than just tackling ability. Teams nowadays covet defenders with elite instincts, sideline-to-sideline range and versatility to stay on the field for all three downs, which are all areas in which Louis excels. Scouts have noted that while he may be small in stature, there is no challenge too big for him.
The importance of an all-around athletic competitor like Louis at the center of the defense is exactly what teams are looking for in a league increasingly defined by speed and offensive firepower. Players with Louis’ blend of production, versatility and athleticism are not easy to find. If teams want him, they shouldn’t expect him to be available on Day 2.
The “shark mentality” defined Pitt’s defense during Kyle Louis’s collegiate career. Now, after establishing himself as one of the ACC’s most productive and versatile defenders while also delivering a standout performance at the NFL Combine, Louis has positioned himself as one of the premier linebacker prospects in this 2026 class. With all of this in mind, Louis fits exactly what today’s NFL demands from a three-down linebacker. Kyle Louis belongs in round one.
