Seminoles drub turnover-prone Panthers 58-43 in Tallahassee

The Pitt women’s basketball was unable to ride the momentum of a historic victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels, falling to the 20th ranked Florida State Seminoles on Thursday evening by a final score of 58-43 in Tallahassee.

After Pitt jumped ahead 4-2 with 16:21 remaining in the first half, Florida State permanently wiped away Pitt’s lead and then some, going on an 18-0 run to gain a 20-4 advantage. 

The Panthers would chip away at the Seminoles’ lead a bit in the first half, cutting the deficit to 10 with six minutes remaining. 

But Florida State would never let their lead reach single digits, ending the half on a 12-4 run to take a 32-14 advantage into the intermission.

Pitt continued struggling in the second half, trailing by as much as 22 and never cutting the lead to anything less than 13. 

The Panthers were inefficient on offense, turning the ball over 23 times while only posting six assists, an assist/turnover ratio of .261.

Pitt had no answer for Florida State’s Leticia Romero, who posted 19 points on 8-12 shooting, while adding seven rebounds and three assists.

Monica Wignot and Yacine Diop were the only two Panthers in double figures, each of them scoring 10 points. The team shot 31.5 percent from the field on the night.

The loss drops Pitt’s record to 11-5 on the year, with a conference record of 1-2. 

They will be back in action on Sunday, when they will travel to the McCamish Pavilion to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
