A good first step is Shadyside. It’s not terribly far away from campus – it’s even a pleasant walk on the rare occasion the weather is nice. The key is to venture off Fifth Avenue and meander down through the side streets. There are a lot of impressive houses to gawk at between Oakland and Shadyside, so definitely stray off the beaten path
