Writing Contest

The Pitt News is holding its Fall 2024 writing contest open to Pitt students looking to get their writing published and win prize money! Submissions of nonfiction writing are due November 8 and results will be posted during finals week.

Update for submitters: Due to the schedules of the editorial staff and illustrators during finals week, winning submissions will be posted after winter break. Winners of the contest have been contacted.

Submission Details:

  • Submissions can include anything nonfiction (including poetry).
  • Submissions should be no more than 800 words.
  • Any Pitt student not affiliated with The Pitt News can participate for a chance to win prize money and get their work published!
  • Form submissions must contain a name, email, PeopleSoft number and a view-only link to the written piece that has no identifying information on the document. If we cannot access your document, we will not reach out to request access.
  • Submissions are free and limited to one per student.

Winning Submissions:

We will be selecting three winners and five runners-up. The awards are as follows:

  • 1st place: $100
  • 2nd place: $75
  • 3rd place: $50

The five runners-up will not receive monetary compensation but will still have their submissions published.

The three placing winners of the contest and five runners-up will have their work published on this page. The winners and runners-up will receive copy editing, but no other formal edits/revisions.
