Emergency responders closed traffic on Terrace Street between Lothrop and O’Hara streets for about an hour after the line broke. They allowed traffic to proceed normally around 2:15 p.m.

Pitt and city police also responded to the scene. The alert said a contractor doing work in the area likely broke the line.

Pitt sent out the alert — the first in more than a year — at about 1:30 p.m. to all students, faculty and staff who subscribe to the alert service.
