Fourteen innings of softball took place at Vartabedian Field in Pittsburgh this Sunday as the Panthers faced off against IUP in an exhibition doubleheader. Pitt took care of business, scoring 22 runs on 27 hits — as opposed to IUP’s three runs on 13 hits — during the doubleheader. Energy was high in the Panthers’ dugout throughout both games, and there was certainly a lot to celebrate.
New faces making noise
Multiple first-years made an impact with their Panther debuts. Amelia Long, who started the game and threw five shutout innings, allowed only one hit. Another first-year pitcher, Mia Kliethermes, came in after Long and pitched four innings, surrendering one run.
Addison Oberbreckling recorded her first at-bats as a Panther, hitting two doubles and scoring three RBIs. Oberbreckling also spent some innings at first base. Another infielder who came in as a defensive substitution was Amelia Thornton, who made a nice play at third right when she was subbed in.
Queen Vaughn
Graduate Infielder Tieley Vaughn had a strong day at the plate, going 2-2 with a double, a home run and five RBI’s. Vaughn also drew two walks and was used as a pinch runner in the later innings. In the infield, Vaughn assisted on two clutch double plays to prevent IUP from scoring early.
Filling out the scorebook
It was an incredible offensive showing for the Blue and Gold. Every player recorded a hit, with the Panthers collecting 27 in total. Pitt hit four home runs, two of which went way over the center field wall.
What’s next for the Panthers
The Panthers will be back in action next week to play their seventh of eight exhibition games this fall. Pitt will take on St. Francis at 1 p.m. next Sunday at Vartabedian Field.
