First, research through the University Housing Resource Center to identify both reputable and discredited landlords. Go over your lease with your landlord. You can get help reading it at the Oakland Planning and Development Corporation or the Housing Resource Center. If needed, speak with the landlord about anything vague or needing revision within the lease. Learn your tenant rights. Learn the landlord’s responsibilities. Get everything in writing. Don’t accept contracts without paper evidence. Look for any damages in the apartment or house. Document these with a camera. Make sure the landlord knows about these damages, if there are any.
