After four years of planning and fine-tuning, Pitt quietly released a list of course requirements for a new data science major over the summer, which students will be able to declare when the fall semester starts on Friday.

Eleanor Mattern, the director of the School of Computing and Information’s Sara Fine Institute, leads the committee for the Year of Data and Society — the upcoming 2021-22 installment in the annual “Year Of” series hosted by the Office of the Provost.

The dean of Pitt’s School of Computing and Information will step down from his role effective July 1, University officials said last week.

The 2019-20 academic year marked the first time SCI admitted first-year undergraduate students.
