Pennsylvania residents and college students will be able to stay on their parents’… Pennsylvania residents and college students will be able to stay on their parents’ health insurance plan until they turn 30, thanks to a bill passed today.

Under the new bill, anyone younger than 30 and is unmarried, has no dependents, has no other health coverage and is a Pennsylvania resident or is enrolled as a full-time college student can remain under their parents’ health insurance plan.

But insurance companies can raise premiums for families who take this option. So participating might require some families to ask their young adult to help pay for the insurance plan.

Most states have passed or are working on passing similar legislation, pushing the maximum age for using a parent’s insurance up to 25 or 30.

Senate Bill 189, which the Pennsylvania House of Representatives approved today, now awaits Gov. Ed Rendell’s signature to become law.
