Unfortunately for Williams, that award was split between DeJuan Blair and Hasheem Thabeet. Now, Williams is left to prove his critics wrong. In Louisville’s scare against Siena, Williams racked up 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. ‘ ‘ ‘ Arizona certainly isn’t behaving like a No. 12 seed. The Wildcats won their first two games comfortably and are now looking to dethrone the Tournament’s overall top seed. If they’re going to succeed, the tall duo of Jordan Hill and Chase Budinger will need to find the basket early and often. The Storyline: ‘ ‘ ‘ Considering Arizona was one of the last at-large teams to get into the Tournament, this matchup doesn’t look very competitive on paper. However, no one really thought that Siena was going to give Louisville a run for its money either. The Wildcats won’t be intimidated by Louisville’s No. 1 seed or its talented roster. No. 2 Michigan State vs. No. 3 Kansas, Friday 9:37 p.m. Key Players: ‘ ‘ ‘ Michigan State senior Travis Walton scored a career-high 18 points against Southern California but was also completely invisible against Robert Morris. It might be time for sophomore guard Kalin Lucas to show the nation why he leads his team in scoring (14.6 points per game) and assists (4.5 per game). ‘ ‘ ‘ For the defending national champion Kansas Jayhawks, Cole Aldrich is a complete game-changer. Aldrich had a triple-double against Dayton and scored 23 against North Dakota State. His presence inside will keep the Jayhawks in the game if shots aren’t falling for Kansas’ dynamic guard Sherron Collins. The Storyline: ‘ ‘ ‘ It hasn’t exactly been a cakewalk for Big Ten schools in this Tournament, but the Spartans are still hanging tough thanks in part to coach Tom Izzo’s big-game experience. ‘ ‘ ‘ On the other side, Kansas looks to win a second-straight national title with a team that has changed drastically since last season. The Jayhawks will need confidence if they want to continue their tournament run. The South (Memphis, Tenn) No. 2 Oklahoma vs. No. 3 Syracuse, Friday 7:27 p.m. Key Players: ‘ ‘ ‘ It would be absolutely criminal to not list Blake Griffin in this category. When he’s healthy, Griffin is one of the most unstoppable forces in the country. He displayed his dominance by scoring 33 points and collecting 17 rebounds during Oklahoma’s win over Michigan. ‘ ‘ ‘ Syracuse point guard Jonny Flynn has powered the Orange offense through its recent stretch of winning basketball. Defenders have a terrible time trying to keep the speedy Flynn in front of them and when he’s not taking the ball to the rack, he’s creating open looks for his teammates. The Storyline: ‘ ‘ ‘ Syracuse doesn’t have anybody to matchup with Griffin, but then again, not many schools do have someone who can defend the sophomore phenom. However, it won’t be easy for the Sooners. Syracuse is playing with a tremendous amount of confidence, and it won’t be scared off by Griffin and his ever-growing trophy case. No. 1 North Carolina vs. No. 4 Gonzaga, Friday 9:57 p.m. Key Players: ‘ ‘ ‘ Key Players? North Carolina’s entire team is filled with key players, each one capable of taking a game over. The Tar Heels have five, yes five, players that average more than 10 points a game. Last year’s Naismith Award winner, Tyler Hansbrough, leads the team with averages of 21.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. If Ty Lawson’s toe holds up, North Carolina will be a tough out. ‘ ‘ ‘ While North Carolina is a team comprised of superstars, Gonzaga is comprised of high-quality players, including four with double-digit scoring averages and four who average at least four rebounds a game. If Matt Bouldin and Josh Heytvelt get off to a fast start, the Tar Heels might find themselves in trouble. The Storyline: ‘ ‘ ‘ North Carolina’s talent and depth is well documented. The issue is whether or not it can stay focused and avoid having an off night. It only takes one sub-par performance to end a season. However, what has made the Tar Heels so good for so long is their ability to play at the same high level, regardless of the opponent. ‘
