In response to last Tuesday’s article “New Marxist group formed at Pitt,” I find that socialism has one major problem that outshines them all: It doesn’t work with people. Sure, it’s the epitome of the preschool ideal – share and share alike, but even toddlers, whose minds aren’t nearly as developed or tainted as adults’, can’t make this work. Everyone soon comes to find that life just isn’t fair. It should not be your country’s responsibility to help you if you don’t want to help yourself.

If you do not feel that you have enough capital, then you have numerous opportunities to find a way of obtaining more.

The laws upheld by this nation grant us freedoms and equalities that do not go un-coveted by other countries and after that, people are just not equal. Face it; there will always be someone smarter, better, faster or stronger. It’s time to stop being jealous of the kids with better toys.

Even to look at it from an economical point of view in terms of the ratio of inputs vs. outputs, not everyone is willing/capable of producing an equal ratio and thus the issue of loafing arises. Personally, I wouldn’t want a brain surgeon working with the same enthusiasm as the person who fills my fast food orders because they both know that they will receive the same distribution of wealth no matter how or what they perform.

Am I saying that all wages and salaries are awarded on the basis of pure merit? No, but I do believe that the impossibility of such a governmental structure is why socialism only exists functionally in works of science fiction.

If this organization gets approved, it might be the second most impractical thing on campus after the fiberglass panthers.
