Letters to The Editor

I am a bit perplexed and upset at the priority that was given in your recap of Tuesday’s SGB meeting. It seems that yet again, the controversial topic of fiberglass statues has been put at the forefront, while more important and prominent issues were clearly discussed at the meeting. I would know because I was in attendance. In fact, I probably would not have read through the entire article had I not been looking for mention of my organization’s grant.

The importance of allowing students to carry Pepper Spray on campus, in my opinion, is far more important and relevant to student life than the reiteration of the same trivial points that were stated in both the headline of the previous issue and an editorial bashing the SGB for their decision in that same issue.

To give the issue of student safety two sentences’ worth of attention at the end of an article, while allowing these obnoxious plaster statues to occupy the vast majority of the newspaper’s top story is simply absurd. Had you opted to remove the repetitive points from the first portion of the article, you may have had room for the specific details given by president Shady Henien regarding the availability of Pepper Spray to our students.

And what about the one or two sentences regarding the important issues of food quality improvement on campus? Where are they? It seems that your newspaper felt the need to redeem itself after Henien publicly called you out for your slanderous publishing of the SGB-bashing editorial, and this has tainted what we as a student body read as news.

I sincerely urge the newspaper to step back and look at what is important for us as a student body to read and print the topics that are relevant to the betterment of the student body, not just the topics that interest you as an organization looking for readership and redemption.

Dear Editor,

I resent the fact that Philly fans are bashed in Mike Gladyz’s column “Philly sports fans have it coming,” as well as inaccurately represented. The difference between Philly fans and the gentleman who wrote the article is that Philly fans would never hang up their jerseys and quit sports forever. This should be obvious in the fact that even though we’ve had so many losses, fans still support their team and are unashamed. I also resent the fact that the article generalized so drastically. It is actually the few that make Philly fans look bad. The majority are the good fans.

Grown men cry when Philly loses because they care that much. No one can ever call a Philly fan someone who jumps on a bandwagon and Philly fans should be respected, not insulted for being so loyal. Someone from the Philly area should know that and have some respect and sensitivity toward Philly fans, the most loyal fans in the league. Such an unbreakable bond between city and citizen is not something to laugh at but something to aspire to. Also, the column shouldn’t blame the “sports gods” for the actions of a team, anyone with sports knowledge knows exactly why teams fail and the “gods” certainly aren’t one of them. I detest such controversial, misinformed writing that is included in a newspaper that is read by so many people from Philly.

Dear Editor

The panther statues event has cemented my opinion that the SGB is corrupt like any other form of government, be it at the high school, local, state, national, or international level. It could just be Shady, but then again, you’re only as strong as your weakest link, especially if it’s the president.

Sincerely,
