There’s no need to leave Oakland and head downtown tonight for your music fix, as the Pittsburgh Symphony Chamber Orchestra will take the stage right here on Pitt’s campus at Bellefield Hall.

The event includes work by Composer of the Year Christopher Theofanidis, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Joseph Haydn.

Andres Cardenes, who celebrates the 35th anniversary of his professional debut this season, will serve as both the conductor and as a soloist for the program. Audiences and critics from around the world have praised Cardenes’ performances, and he has appeared as a soloist with more than 100 orchestras on four continents.

The show will open with Theofanidis’ piece “Visions and Miracles” and is the first of four of his compositions to be presented to Pittsburgh audiences this season.

Other pieces include Haydn’s “Symphony No. 43 in E-flat major,” nicknamed “Mercury,” and three of Mozart’s pieces: “Adagio in E major,” “Rondo in C major” and “Symphony No. 33 in B-flat major.”

An hour before the concert, music history Professor Anna Nisnevich, Cardenes and Theofanidis will appear onstage together, discussing the night’s pieces and the importance of listening to live music. This event is co-presented with the University’s music department and Pitt Arts.
