In The Pitt News’ annual “New Student Guide,” the editors reran a year-old article on the fraternity and sorority community, which contained outdated information. This extraordinary lapse in fact checking and editorial review has significant negative consequences for the fraternity and sorority community. Over the past year, fraternities and sororities have led the single largest philanthropic initiative of any student organizations at Pitt, and have made considerable progress in improving our risk-management procedures. Both these points were either contradicted or misrepresented by the expired article that ran. In addition, the process of membership intake by National Pan-Hellenic Council, the governing body for historically black fraternities and sororities, cites information that at times stands in complete opposition of fact.

The fraternity and sorority community stands behind The Pitt News, as the independent news source for the undergraduate students of this university. This responsibility holds with it an obligation to accurately report news of relevance. We call on the editors of The Pitt News to renew their commitment to this basic standard of journalistic integrity.
