Smoke detector in each apartment. Test monthly. Replace batteries each term. Two emergency exits to street (windows count for first- and second-floor apartments) Fire escape or two stairwells needed for higher floors. Emergency exits must be kept clear, and open outward without a key. Exit signs and emergency lights are recommended and required for multi-unit buildings. Fire extinguisher near kitchen as well as available and identified on each floor in multi-unit buildings.

Security

Locked building entrance with intercom or doorbell for guest access (recommended). Private mailbox (preferably lockable) for each apartment. Deadbolt and/or security chain on apartment door. Lockable windows, especially on lower floors. Bars or other security features recommended for ground-floor windows. Keep emergency numbers posted by your telephone: 911 for the City of Pittsburgh Police and Fire Department and 811 on-campus for Pitt police.

Insurance

Renter’s insurance or coverage included in your parents’ homeowner’s policy are options. It doesn’t prevent damage or injury, but it will simplify recovery from damage or injury for you or your guests.
