In the article “After 20 years, State drinking age is still 21,” (Sept. 9) Rebecca Shaver of… In the article “After 20 years, State drinking age is still 21,” (Sept. 9) Rebecca Shaver of Mothers Against Drunk Driving makes this claim:

“Excessive drinking leads to other types of violence, such as unwanted pregnancy, unprotected sex and STDs.”

Unless the meaning of the acronym “STD” has been changed without my knowledge, I am unable to imagine how any of these things, even given the broadest possible definition of violence I can imagine, be called violent. Unless there is some local usage wherever Ms. Shaver lives that defines “violent” as nothing more than a synonym for “undesirable,” it seems that we must begin to face the possibility that the executive director of MADD Pennsylvania is an idiot.
