I am writing in response to the editorial titled “Military Style Weapons Not For Civilians.”… I am writing in response to the editorial titled “Military Style Weapons Not For Civilians.” The writer is incorrect in stating that, after the ban was lifted, American citizens can now purchase AK-47s, Uzis and TEC-9s legally. There is a common misconception that all assault weapons can be purchased now that the ban has been lifted.

However, this statement couldn’t be further from the truth. The National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action notes that foreign rifles such as the AK-47 and Uzi were banned from importation in 1989 under federal firearms importation law, and “when the Clinton ban expires, these guns will remain banned under these other laws.” So, contrary to what some people are saying, these types of guns will not be available for purchase in the United States.
