The Pitt women’s tennis team was scheduled to play three matches against Big East opponents… The Pitt women’s tennis team was scheduled to play three matches against Big East opponents over the weekend, but weather conditions permitted them to play only two. The Panthers’ match on Sunday, against Seton Hall was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Panthers (10-4 overall, 2-3 Big East) dropped the two matches they did play against Villanova and Rutgers.

Villanova 4, Pitt 2

Pitt went to Villanova on Friday looking to win its third Big East game of the season against the Wildcats.

The Panthers were on their way to that third win after they took a 2-1 lead over the Wildcats.

Both Becky Emmers and Annie Davies won their matches in three sets. Emmers defeated Melissa Reed 6-3, 2-6 and 7-6 (4) and Davies defeated Courtney Flezzani 6-3, 4-6 and 6-3.

But Villanova (11-7, 2-3) fought back and won the final three matches to win 4-2. Both Hayley Hughes and Emily Hughes lost in three sets in the fourth and fifth singles matches.

Since the doubles matches were not played, there was a point that was not awarded to either team. That gave Konita Jude the chance to make the match against Villanova a 3-3 tie when she competed against Leighann Reilly in the final singles match. But Jude was defeated in two straight sets, 7-6 (3) and 6-1.

Rutgers 5, Pitt 2

On Saturday, Pitt traveled to New Brunswick, N.J., to take on the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers.

On this day, the doubles matches were played, but the Panthers were not able to come away with the point. The Scarlet Knights (11-7, 5-3) were awarded the point, sweeping the Panthers in all three doubles matches. Pitt lost all three matches by a score of 8-3.

After three singles matches, the Panthers found themselves tied with Rutgers at two. Laura Pegula defeated Andrea Weckstein 4-6 and 6-2. Davies collected her second singles win of the weekend against Alina Balasa in two sets, 7-6 (5) and 6-2.

The Panthers, just as they did against Villanova, lost the final three singles matches to fall to Rutgers, 5-2.

The Hughes sisters both fell in the fourth and fifth singles matches again. Hayley Hughes lost in two sets to Jill Markowitz, 6-2 and 6-0, and Emily Hughes fell 6-0 and 6-2 to Helen Magomedova.

The Panthers will travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to take on Bucknell at 3 p.m. on Friday and Army at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
