With shiny ornaments and glistening snowflakes, the holidays are here in Oakland, and the Whoville pop-up bar wants to provide some Christmas spirits — literally.
Though finals season is quickly approaching, there are still many holiday activities that students can participate in to help them destress and enjoy festive events before winter break. Here is a short list of some festive activities for students to explore.
Kate’s Kid Book Bash returned to East Liberty on Saturday for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It featured Riverstone Books, as well as more than 28 children’s and young adult authors from Pittsburgh and beyond.

Around 150 attendees gathered in the WPU ballroom to learn more about Islamic culture throughout the world at MSA’s Halal-A-Palooza on Friday. The room was full of booths displaying various Islamic countries’ cultural attire, cuisine and more.
Oakland Business Improvement District is gearing up for the winter season with a new art-based community project, Glowland. Glowland is a month-long winter festival that features a series of light-based art installations, yard games and live music until Dec. 18.
Dressember is a non-profit organization fighting to end human trafficking. The main fundraising event is a 31-day style challenge where advocates wear a dress or tie every day of December to raise awareness about human trafficking.
Andrew Weintraub founded the University Gamelan Ensemble in 1997. It plays gamelan music of the Sundanese people, which contains a set of predominantly percussion instruments, including tuned gongs, metal-keyed instruments, drums and more.
Phipps Conservatory’s Winter Flower Show and Light Garden includes 15 acres of lights and plants. This year’s theme is arctic adventure. Many rooms have topiary winter animals which are made of natural materials such as dry grasses and mosses.
The game show “Wheel of Fortune” showcased Noah Stockwell, a sophomore nursing major, on Nov. 24. Stockwell took home $69,440, along with a trip to Hawaii and a $1,000 Tower Records gift card.
As students struggle to survive finals over the next two weeks, here’s something to look forward to ─ winter break. Here are five just-for-fun book recommendations that span across genres ─ for when students can finally escape the textbooks.
