Pitt removes “antiquated” gendered homecoming king and queen titles

Pitt’s Alumni Association removed the gendered titles of homecoming king and queen for this October’s homecoming festivities and are instead opting for two gender-inclusive “Spirit of Pitt” winners.
In addition to the modern Hippocratic oath, the current first-year class of Pitt’s School of Medicine took a nontraditional oath on Aug. 14 addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, racial injustice and health care inequities.

The current first-year class of Pitt’s School of Medicine took a nontraditional oath on Aug. 14 in addition to the modern Hippocratic oath.
Chancellor Patrick Gallagher said Thursday that it’s likely that next semester’s schedule will be compressed similarly to the fall so there aren’t vacations where people leave and come back to campus.

Gallagher: ‘Anticipate’ Flex@Pitt, compressed schedule next semester

Chancellor Patrick Gallagher said Thursday that he expects the Flex@Pitt model to continue into the spring semester due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He also said it’s likely that next semester’s schedule will be compressed similar to the fall so there aren’t vacations where people leave and come back to campus.
The Hub, on the back patio of Posvar Hall, is a new, temporary outdoor dining location that opened Aug. 17.

Students offer mixed reviews of new meal plans, food under Compass Group

Compass Group, Pitt’s new dining contractor, requires all first-year students living on-campus to have unlimited meal plans. Along with new meal plans, students shared their opinions on new food options, dining location changes and safety.
Pitt announced at the end of August that it would require first-year students to take a one-credit online course on systemic anti-racism and anti-Black racism.

‘A good stepping stone’: Students, professors review new anti-racism course

Leigh Patel, a professor in the School of Education, was one of the committee members who helped develop Pitt’s inaugural Anti-Black Racism: History, Ideology and Resistance class. She said while this class is an important addition to Pitt’s curriculum, being anti-racist is a lifelong journey.

Pitt adds 22 COVID-19 cases since Thursday

Pitt added 22 new COVID-19 cases, composed of entirely students, between last Friday and Monday, continuing an upward trend in reported cases, though less than in previous case reports.
Members of the Fossil Free Pitt Coalition were escorted out of February’s board of trustees meeting after singing an altered version of “We Shall Not be Moved” by the Song Swappers and stating their demands between verses.

Board committee investigating fossil fuel divestment announces membership

The board of trustees’ Ad-Hoc Committee on Fossil Fuels appointed six committee members as well as a team of liaisons last week. It plans to host public forums in September and October to gather public input about divestment.

Pitt to allow in-person classes if ‘definable benefit,’ remainder to stay online during Elevated posture

Provost Ann Cudd said in a Wednesday afternoon email to faculty members that they can apply to teach their classes in person if there is a “definable benefit” to in-person instruction, and if an instructor’s dean or regional campus president approves teaching plans.

SGB hopeful for update on in-person classes later this week
